Beachport association trials November market

GREY skies marred the start of a street market at Beachport on Saturday morning.

The weather was in stark contrast to the previous days when the mercury hovered around the 30 degree mark.

Held three times a year for more than two decades, the seaside markets are an initiative of the Beachport District Development Association.

Vendors set up market stalls along a closed Railway Terrace, with a four-hour street closure starting at 9am.

Among the 14 busy stalls for the hundreds of local and visiting shoppers were those selling art, jewellery, honey and woodwork.

The stallholders included artist and newly-minted senior of the year Bob Grieve and honey vendor and Naracoorte Lucindale Council elected member Scott McLaughlin.

Ian Lister used the occasion to promote the annual Variety Bash and brought his distinctive vehicle to the market.

At the other end of the scale, the Beachport Surf Life Saving Club generated interest with its beach buggy used for patrols of Rivoli Bay.

Association president and market coordinator Ros Brown said the latest market was timed to coincide with a four-day holiday long weekend which is created by many Victorians at Melbourne Cup time.

“We thought we would give the November market a try,” Ms Brown said.

“Beachport does get busy in October and November.

“We will do an assessment and speak to stallholders.”

The funds raised by the market will support various Beachport community projects.
