IT has been difficult to miss the message in Penola this month as the town is showered in a sea of pink to raise awareness about breast cancer.
The inaugural Pink Up Penola has been hailed a success around the district with a packed calendar of events during October well supported, helping to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation.
While the month-long celebration has made a big statement in its own right, several stand-out events have furthered the message across all demographics, including Penola school children recently forming the iconic ‘pink lady’, wa figure synonymous with breast cancer.
The community call-to-arms will continue on Sunday with the colour run and market day at Greenrise Reservation Reserve from 9am.
Pink Up Penola committee member Mardi Currie said stall holders from across the Limestone Coast would attend to event, including a number of local displays.
“We will have the Pink Up Penola committee who will be doing a barbecue with sausages, steak and salads as well as lollies and our Pink Up Penola stubby holders if there are any left,” Ms Currie said.
“There will also be local jewellery and cleaning products, craft items, strawberries and a young girl who has made scrunchies.
“But the event overall has been well received by the community and they seem very excited.”
Ms Currie encouraged anyone interested in hosting a stall to get in contact.
“We would like to get more stalls out there as it will be a nice day and we are looking forward to enjoying the community spirit of Penola as a whole,” she said.
“We also hope that people do come out and support the colour run by walking or running but also keep in mind the main focus remains on breast cancer awareness.”
Other Pink Up Penola events to take place recently include the pink donut day, along Friday’s Wear Pink to Penola Day.
Penola Primary School principal Anna Copping said the facility was privileged to have taken part in the month’s events alongside other schools.
“We think it is an honour to take part in any community events that present such a great message,” Ms Copping said.
“The students loved it and it is a fantastic initiative.”
Pink Up Penola committee member Angela Winter said it was touching for the whole community to unite and show support for the cause.
“Everybody has been very supportive and we look forward to the weekend with the colour run.”
