AS THE first Southern Rock Lobster Zone pots of the season were pulled yesterday, fishermen across the region were not disappointed with opening prices.
With the Victorian season finishing up at around $115 per kilogram, numbers were expected to hover around the same mark.
According to Sky Seafoods’ Andrew Lawrie, “red gold” was fetching an impressive $100 to $105/kg yesterday.
Although slightly “soft” compared to last season’s near record of $118, Mr Lawrie said the prices were promising.
“It is not where it was last season, but $100 to $105 is a great start,” he said.
“We are seeing some big crayfish and catch numbers are high.
“The season looks like it will shape up well.”
Mr Lawrie said the warm weather across the South East was a positive for the industry.
“The forecast is looking good for the next week or so,” he said.
“This morning (Wednesday) was a bit chilly first thing, but it turned out to be a beautiful day out on the water.
“If the weather stays like this it will be great.”
With most fishermen finishing the 2018/19 season ahead of schedule in March, Mr Lawrie said they were eager to get back out on the water.
“It was one of the longest breaks between seasons we have seen,” he said.
“Which means a long time between income, so the guys were definitely ready to get back out there.
“I think everyone is looking forward to a good season ahead.”
