RED Cross supporters across the Limestone Coast were given insight into the global organisation’s impact last week as the region hosted South Australian director Mark Groote.
Mr Groote was in Mount Gambier on Thursday for the organisation’s annual conference with dozens of staff, volunteers and members gathering at City Hall for the informative event.
Mr Groote said he was proud of the work Red Cross collectively achieved over the years and was excited for what is planned next.
“I have no doubt the next 12 months will be equally if not more successful as the last,” Mr Groote said.
“Although there have been some highs and lows over my two years of involvement, we as a group have helped many vulnerable community members.
“The organisation would not thrive without the help of volunteers, members and staff and we thank them for their continual efforts.”
Mr Groote said regional branches were the core components behind the success of Red Cross.
“Our volunteers wear our brand proudly and it is important we support them in anyway possible,” he said.
“I receive an overwhelming sadness when I am notified a branch is closing and we are undergoing conversations as to how we can provide support before that happens.
“We are obviously unable to be in more than one place at a time and it is then when our widespread regional branches play their part.”
Mr Groote touched on the various programs delivered across the state including the recently-released reconciliation action plan and justice program, as well as national drought appeal, migrant support program, community home support program and many more.
Mr Groote said the migrant support programs implemented by Red Cross Limestone Coast had been quite successful.
“Our migrant support program across the state has underwent major alterations in the past 18 months,” he said.
“We have made a strong internal commitment to continue supporting migrants which have moved to areas such as Mount Gambier.
“I think the Limestone Coast’s conversational English program has been effective, which will continue to be supported.”
Mr Groote said the Red Cross employs around 100 staff members across the state with support from around 1800 volunteers and 1500 members.
The event also featured presentations from FoodBank Mount Gambier branch manager Lynne Neshoda and Mount Gambier North Schoool student counsellor Simone Badenoch.
