City councillor elected as state Liberal Party vice-president

MOUNT Gambier city councillor Ben Hood has been elected to one of the South Australian Liberal Party’s most powerful internal positions at its annual general meeting on the weekend.

The elected member is now one of four vice-presidents of the South Australian branch after securing victory at the Saturday event, which was attended by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Premier Steven Marshall.

The State Executive has responsibility for the day to day running of the South Australian Liberal Party and Mr Hood’s role will include making decisions about campaign funding and party preselections.

Mr Hood, who also serves as vice president of Mount Gambier’s Liberal Party branch, refused to comment on his election, simply saying it was an “internal party matter.”

He directed enquiries to the SA Liberal Party state director Sascha Meldrum.

Ms Meldrum has been approached for comment.

Mr Hood’s election to the powerful state executive is a coup for Liberal’s conservative wing with all four vice-presidents hailing from the party’s right faction.
