LIMESTONE Coast celebrities will take the plunge into a pool of icy-cold water this week to raise funds for the Fight Motor Neurone Disease (MND) foundation.
Tenison Woods College will host its own ‘Big Freeze’ on Thursday, with a number of students, staff and community members to head down the purpose-built slide.
The event coincides with the college’s charity day, initiated last year by 2018 college captains Evangelia Wichmann and Daniel Ker, which will see Reception to Year 12 students participate in a range of activities during the day.
College principal David Mezinec – who is among the 14 staff and students to participate – said it was fantastic to see students committed to supporting the important cause.
“I’m looking forward to being involved in what will be a rewarding and entertaining event, raising critical funds to help find a cure for MND.”
Among the city ‘celebs’ to take the plunge are a number of Mount Gambier Pioneers basketball players, Hit96.1 radio presenters Mitchell and Michael and Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell.
Creative outfits are expected, with participants encouraged to dress up in a costume of their choice.

Instigating the event, college health and physical education teacher and Year 9 well-being coordinator Brad Maney said Neale Daniher’s Big Freeze at the Melbourne Cricket Ground resonated with the Year 9 male cohort.
“I have been looking at different ways to encourage student leadership,” Mr Maney said.
“The college’s event has given students a sense of ownership, satisfaction and has been a great way to raise further awareness.
“The support of not only the college, but the Mount Gambier community, has been astounding and I hope the Tenison Woods College Big Freeze can become an annual event.”
Students have been involved in collecting donations, promoting the event and will help with the setup on the day.
A group of Year 9 and 10 male students have also helped build of the slide for the pool.
Students have established an online donations page, which has already exceeded the its $1000 target.
Cash donations will also be accepted at the event.
The event will be held between 9am and 10am at the Barrie Holmes Stadium on Thursday.
