MARINE LIFE MURAL: Artist Kitt Bennett at the Millicent Skate Park, where he is painting a giant squid on the cement. Picture: AMY MAYNARD

RENOWNED artist Kitt Bennett has started painting a magnificent giant squid on the Millicent Skate Park with the young talented artist working hard to get the mural completed before the rain hits.

“It washes away the chalk, so you have to start again,” Kitt said.

The squid has been rendered in black paint, but the chalk helps Kitt map out how the paint is applied over the edges and curves of the skate park.

“I received instructions from the council to make it something water-themed, so I had some direction there,” Kitt said.

“And after looking at the photographs of the skate park I realised I needed something that was malleable, so I went with a sea creature, a squid.

“An octopus was also considered.”

Kitt’s work is being sponsored by the Wattle Range Council and Imagine Millicent, a public arts group that is a subsidiary of the Millicent Business and Community Association.

Association chair Lee Morgan said the mural will be a drawcard for Millicent.

“It’s fantastic to be able to have something that makes a statement in town and thvwwat we have nationally recognised artists working here,” Mr Morgan said.

Mr Morgan said both the public arts group and business association was also working with local artists on projects.

However for something onfthe skate park’s scale, the expertise of someone like Kitt was needed.

“We do have to look outwards in order for things to happen inwards,” said.

Whilst the tentacles of the squid stretch on for metres, the mural is not the largest scale work that Kitt has done.

“I reckon my biggest mural is the one I did of a giant purple skeleton that stretched across two basketball courts,” Kitt said.

The mural received worldwide media coverage and can be viewed at kittbennett.com
