Artists kicking goals for youth charity

Di Ind April Hague TBW Newsgroup
TRANSFORMING THE CANVAS: Lucky bidder Di Ind with South East artist April Hague as the two celebrate the final bid on April’s football canvas.

SOUTH East artists thrived on Friday night as their unique creations – using footballs as canvasses – went under the hammer to raise $4500 for charity.

Sales of exhibition pieces will be put towards supporting the Youth Opportunities Personal Leadership Program, which has helped over 300 youths across the region.

The program has been held in Mount Gambier, Millicent and Allendale East, with Grant and Penola high schools recently hosting their first graduation ceremonies.

Nearing its third year, the program aims to give students additional support needed to gain life-long skills.

At Friday’s exhibition opening night at the Riddoch Art Gallery, two students spoke about their program experience and how it had helped their personal development.

The exhibition – which will be displayed at the gallery for another month – features footballs transformed by South East artists, alongside regional identities.

A large shipping container is currently located in the Cave Gardens to accommodate the exhibition, which expands out of the gallery.

The exhibition is open until July 31.
