Sisters ‘clean up’ in messy kids competition

SISTER ACT: Zaylee, 3 and sister Aaliyah, seven months, were both crowned Weet-Bix’s most messy kids with Zaylee winning in 2016 and Aaliyah following in her footsteps this year.

ONE little South East resident has passed her messy legacy onto her younger sister in a bid for national fame.

In 2016, Allendale East resident Zaylee Welsh outshone Weet-Bix loving kids across the country when she won the Weet-Bix Messy Kids competition at just 10 months of age.

COOKING UP A STORM: At just seven months of age, Aaliyah Welsh won this year’s Weet-Bix Messy Kids competition.

Now her sister Aaliyah has followed in her footsteps for the 2019 instalment.

Seven month old Aaliyah, her mum Rebecca Kurzman and dad Evan Welsh put their thinking caps on to brainstorm an idea that would make their entry stand out for the nation-wide search.

The competition requires parents to send a picture of their messy kids to cereal giant Sanitarium, with a share of $5000 up for grabs this year.

Five competitors were chosen each week over five weeks with the final “messiest” child selected to win $500.

After Zaylee won the competition in 2016, Ms Kurzman said it was only fair she enter Aaliyah this year.

“I saw it again and thought I had better enter Aaliyah as well,” she said.

“When Zaylee won we got $10,000 which was pretty amazing for us as a young family at the time as we were able to use it on much needed renovations to our home.

“Aaliyah’s was not quite that much money, but we deposited hers directly into a bank account for her future, which we also plan to do for Zaylee.”

When brainstorming a winning image, Ms Kurzman decided to be creative by dressing Aaliyah like a Weet-Bix chef.

MESSY LEGACY: Zaylee Welsh, now 3, was just 10 months old when she won $10,000 in the 2016 Weet-Bix Messy kids competition. Her younger sister has followed in her footsteps taking out this year’s event.

Although Aaliyah is only young and does not eat too many solid foods, Ms Kurzman said she is a huge fan of Weet-Bix, which was helpful when getting the perfect shot.

“She is a really happy and bubbly baby,” she said.

“So she was quite animated when I was taking her photograph – plus she loves eating Weet-Bix so I do not think she was too upset about the mess we made.

“It is all a bit of fun but we are obviously really proud to have both our girls win – it is something special they will share forever.”

Ms Kurzman said the pair were inseparable, with Zaylee even sharing a special prop for Aaliyah’s entry.

“The girls used the same aeroplane spoon for the photo,” Ms Kurzman said.

“I got it out and thought it best make an appearance again for Aaliyah’s photograph.

“I am sure they are both going to be the best of friends – saying Zaylee adores Aaliyah is an understatement.

“They also have a big brother Baylan who they love and adore.”
