Permanent city parking space set up for travellers

MOUNT Gambier’s Frew Park is now home to a purpose-built recreational vehicle parking bay through a $140,000 City Council project.

The large-scale project – carried out under council’s 2018/19 budget – follows multiple requests from the public for a recreational vehicle focused site.

The parking bay features a grey and black water dump point, connection to sewerage, solar lighting, picnic benches, water fountain, bitumen works and landscaping.

“The location is an ideal site given its close proximity to the visitor centre and visibility from major roads,” council engineering design and contracts manager Daryl Morgan said.

“Most importantly it is only a five minute walk to the city’s centre.”

Mr Morgan said Frew Park is a “perfect area” for families and pets as the oval allows for recreational activities following travel.

The Australian Caravan Club (ACC) has commended council on the project, calling it a step towards making Mount Gambier an RV friendly city.

“There are tens of thousands of RV travellers on the road at any one time throughout Australia,” Limestone Coast ACC president Paul Smith said.

“It has been well documented these travellers spend at least $100 per day on average.”

Despite there being no parking restrictions during the day, City Council’s by-laws prevent overnight camping.
