COMMUNITY members are encouraged to put forward their ideas for the naming of Mount Gambier’s $39.1m community recreation centre development.
Up to five names will be shortlisted by City Council before the public will be given another chance to provide feedback.
Names must meet a certain criteria in order to be considered and should communicate something meaningful as well as be distinctive and easy to remember.
Council has also requested names must be future orientated, representative of the community or reflective of ancient or modern history on the site.
The name must not represent an individual community member and those who wish to participate must also keep in mind the visual of the name.
“Now that federal and state capital funding for the project has been secured and we have turned the first sod on site it is time to consider a new name for the facility the community can really connect with,” Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin said.
“The hub will be the most significant recreational facility in our region with state-of-the-art aquatic, fitness, sports, cultural, youth, cafe and creche facilities and it needs a name to reflect these attributes.”
Encouraging the community to get creative with their names Mayor Martin suggested a name reflecting Mount Gambier’s history, a clever acronym or something that will appropriately “reflect the use of the community facility that will be used for the next 50 years or so”.
Ideas can be submitted in the naming boxes provided at the Civic Centre, library and Main Corner complex as well as online.
All community feedback will be assessed with a report identifying the key themes being presented to the Regional Sport and Recreation Centre committee for consideration.
Community members have until June 23 to submit their naming ideas.
