FAMILY AFFAIR: Phoebe and Charlie McCulloch get into the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival Spirit.

YOGA, “The Nylon Zoo”, kite-making, terrariums, painting workshops and mark making are among the eclectic mix of events set to engage children as part of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival next weekend.

Catering for ages from five through to teens, the festival program presents more than 15 workshops, performances and competitions – most of them free – ranging from painting to circus skills over the four day event.

This year the children’s program focus area will be at the Mary MacKillop Memorial School oval, utilising the undercover area if the weather is poor.

According to children’s program co-ordinator Nicole Lear, the move to the Mary MacKillop Memorial School oval was an exciting decision, bringing the kids’ events closer to the cultural heart of Penola’s Petticoat Lane.

“With the growth of the festival, we were keen to create a central space for the children’s activities, with everything – the walk-up workshops, events, food, drink and even the Sunday show – all held in one place, ” Ms Lear said.

Some of the activities include walk and chalk down the lane, terrific terrariums, a brush and mark workshop, kite making station and a nature kitchen for younger children – all at low or no cost.

The popular kids open mic – giving young musicians, singers, writers and poets a chance to share their talents in the heart of the festival – will be held from 1pm on Sunday May 19.

“We’re particularly excited to offer the popular and highly anticipated Sunday show – this year featuring the Super Circus Squad – free of charge,” Ms Lear said.

“We encourage everyone to come along and get involved in all these amazing arts opportunities over the weekend.”

The full program and tickets are available through www.artsfestival.com.au or at the Penola Visitor Information Centre.
