City textile group donates crochet blankets and beanies

DONATIONS: Mount Gambier Library project manager Kristi Leamey and crocheter Val Milner show off the wonderful creations which have been donated.

A CHARITABLE group of crocheters continue to weave their magic in the Mount Gambier community, recently donating dozens of blankets and beanies to local organisations.

The Mount Gambier Library MakerSpace Crochet Club presented 45 handmade blankets to Lambert Village on Monday and has also donated a handful of beanies to be distributed through the Sunset Community Kitchen.

Club organiser and volunteer Val Milner said half of the yarn used to make the blankets was donated by the Mount Gambier community.

“Heaps of yarn has been donated by the public after we put a call out which has been fantastic,” Ms Milner said.

“The group began about four years ago, but I have been crocheting for years and years,” she said.

“We first started with three or four people and thought that we would see how it goes but it just took off from there.

“When we first got the yarn donated we as a group decided that rather than making things for ourselves we should donate it back and we like the fact that it will go to someone who may not have a blanket or may only have some old blankets.”

Mount Gambier Library project manager Kristi Leamey said the club was one of the library’s most successful.

“New members are always welcome and we do wish that we could have Val here every day,” Ms Leamey said.

“But for the two days of the week that she is here we are privileged to have such a special lady here to spread some joy.”

Ms Milner runs beginner lessons, with the club meeting every Monday and Friday from 2pm until 4pm.

“It is as much as a social thing as it is a hobby and I think it fills a little bit of a hole for some,” Ms Milner said.
