MILLICENT’S tourism sector recorded above average visitation numbers over the Geltwood weekend, with hundreds of visitors flocking to Millicent in celebration of the event.
Wattle Range Council tourism and events officer Tamara North said 530 people came through the doors of the Millicent Visitor Information Centre throughout the festival, saying the figures were higher than the 2018 event.
“These figures are above the number of that from last year’s festival,” she said.
“We had a range of people from the Limestone Coast and as far as Western Victoria.
“There was a large group of visitors travelling through the region from Adelaide and Melbourne who decided to spend the night after discovering the Lions Market and Family Fun Day was on the
Sunday.
“This meant they spent more time exploring Millicent.”
At the opposite end of town, the Millicent Gallery also experienced an influx of visitor numbers across the four-day period.
Libraries manager Janice Nitschke estimated 350 and 400 people dropped in to the premises to view the four exhibitions on display.
“Visitors were predominantly from Mount Gambier and Adelaide and were all amazed at the gallery’s space and the library itself,” she said.
“When I told them the story about the SAlt exhibition they were really intrigued about how it was developed and put together, as well as the techniques.
“A small section that everyone embraced was the work of the Millicent arts and craft group who completed a small piece of work each, which we have formed into a mosaic and displayed on the gallery wall.
“Visitors were inspired that a new exhibition had been put together by people who had not exhibited before.
“Along with Robyn Stacey’s photography work, the quilting, SAlt exhibition and the art and craft group’s work all complimented each other and brought together a number of different art techniques.
“Although they were all different it still looked as though it was meant to be exhibited alongside each other and there was a reason for it.
“Geltwood was great and we are looking forward to next year.”
