A RESERVE- PENOLA 58 d KINGSTON 33
WITH Kingston not fielding a Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara A Grade netball side in 2019, the Penola A Reserve girls were unsure what to expect on court this week.
However, the Eagle were off to a flying start and found their groove from the first whistle to lead by five goals at quarter time.
The lead continued to grow each quarter with some good structural improvements from last week.
The Penola goalies fought hard against some talented Kingston defence and at the other end of the court the Eagles’ defensive players provided their usual pressure and forced multiple balls out of court.
Lauren Foster applied strong pressure in wing defence and showed she is capable at both ends of the court, with consistent feeds and patience in wing attack.
Katie Dent played an impressive game in centre, with multiple intercepts, and strong drives through the centre thirds, passing direct to the goalies.
In the end the Eagles were simply too strong for Kingston, with Dent and Foster earning best players for their efforts.
B GRADE – PENOLA 38 d KINGSTON 32
PENOLA’S B Grade side faced tough opposition from Kingston, but finished well for a six-goal win.
The game started even, with each side consistently scoring off their centre pass.
Kingston made few errors and forced Penola to work hard to create opportunities to score.
Amanda Wurst, Amelia Redman, Tayla McKeon and Mandy Gartner drove hard through the centre and fed the goalies well.
Hannah Klemm, Teegan Galpin and Annabel Hayes worked hard in the circle and rebounded their misses well to keep Penola in the game.
Kerry Dent and Nicole Hayes played a strong defensive game, created turnovers and took several rebounds, which allowed Penola to finish with a good win.
Redman and Wurst both played a tight game, applying pressure for the whole game to be awarded best players.
C GRADE – PENOLA 38 d KINGSTON 26
A NEW-LOOK Penola C Grade lineup adjusted well to claim a solid 12-goal victory over Kingston.
The opening term was a tight affair, as Penola’s new combinations struggled to convert accurately, but battled on to be two goals up at the first change.
The Eagles then gained the ascendency in the second and third quarters with good defensive intercepts and pressure lead by Sarah Pitt at goal keeper.
The final term saw the energy slip from the game, but Penola did enough to claim the win.
16 AND UNDER – KINGSTON 42 d PENOLA 12
AFTER a slow start in the Under 16 game against a strong Kingston side, Penola came out firing in the second quarter.
Despite the growing lead to Kingston, Penola’s defensive work down the court helped create many turnovers.
Our best player for the day Shakayla Summerhayes worked hard through the centre and new addition Rene Merrett showed a lot of determination in the ring, with both voted best players on the day.
15 AND UNDER – KINGSTON 18 d PENOLA 17
IT was a tight contest in the Under 15 game, with the young Eagles settling in well after a slow start.
In the second half the girls played a competitive game, with all contributing.
Best player went to Ava Copping, who ran centre all day with good passing and patience throughout the game.
Lucy Caitlin played strong in defence and used her voice to drive the play for the remaining spot not he best players’ list.
13 AND UNDER A – PENOLA 38 d KINGSTON 23
THE Under 13A side claimed a strong win, after a strong and steady start.
Accurate shooting and turnovers around mid court in the first term helped the side gain a small lead at first break.
Determined passes and clear leading, combined with Tess Porter’s impressive accuracy in goal attack contributed to the advantage.
Kingston came out firing in the third quarter, which briefly unsettled the young Eagles and reduced the gap.
However, Penola’s defenders soon found their feet to turn the play around.
The fourth term saw strong contests from both teams.
Loose balls were chased up and turned over to Penola’s advantage for a 15-goal win.
Porter and Amber Morton were awarded best players.
13 AND UNDER B
THE Under 13B girls fought hard all game, with a full four-quarter effort.
Zara, Lilly and Charlize had another cracking game in defence, sticking tight to the opposition and picking off plenty of passes.
Macey ran hard through the centre and found space on the court.
Nellie and Lucy had another good game on the wing, moving the ball well down the court.
Ivy showed again she has a strong hold and can move the ball around the goal circle.
Best players went to Zara Kellett and Macey O’Brien.
13 AND UNDER MODIFIED
THE young 13MOD girls played another great game as they continue to learn their skills.
Grace, Mia and Lilly defended tightly all game, taking many turnovers and driving the ball out of defence well.
Jazz and Jaeda drove well into the ring and provided their goalies with some great feeds, while Ella and Matilda played in front and shot and rebounded well all game.
The girls applied defensive pressure all over the court and created space in offence, which allowed quality leads all over the court.
For big improvements on last week, Ella Skeer and Lilly Hackwill were awarded the coach’s best player awards.
