COMPTON Primary School has swung into fundraising mode with the school setting its sights on completing the Relay for Life next year.
Starting the fundraising drive a year early, the school recently hosted a “relay dress day” with students dressing in either yellow or purple.
Students raised around $100 through gold coin donations, with teacher Toni Hamilton praising the children for embracing the fundraising spirit.
“The students have spoken about ideas for future fundraisers with creative ideas,” Ms Hamilton said.
“They have discussed a car wash, a babysitting night and many other ideas.”
Ms Hamilton said it was hoped through fundraising, students would be encouraged to learn about the Relay for Life meaning.
“Many families within the school have been touched by cancer, so it is important we encourage students to learn about health in that regard.”
Ms Hamilton said a handful of students put their hand up to join the Relay for Life committee with four Year 7 students heading the charge.
“It is touching because the Year 7s are getting so involved despite them not being here next year,” Ms Hamilton said.
“They tell me they will come back to the school for the relay next year which I think is just heart-warming.”
Committee member Kaitlin said she was excited to take part in the project to raise money for a good cause.
“I am a little disappointed I will not be at the school next year for the event, but I plan to come back for it and take part,” Kaitlin said.
“It is great we are raising money for such an important charity.”
Fellow committee member Olivia said the student body was proud to do something great for the community.
“I chose to join the committee because I want to help raise money to support cancer and find a cure,” Olivia said.
With a range of ideas in the works, Compton Primary School will continue to fundraise ahead of next year’s Relay for Life event.
