CAR safety will be put under the spotlight across the region this week thanks to Rotary club fraternity and motoring service providers.
Around 100 cars are expected to stream through the Barry Maney Group’s mechanical workshop on Jubilee Highway West in Mount Gambier tomorrow night for the free annual Rotary Club vehicle lights safety check.
With wintry conditions looming, Lakes Rotary Club Mount Gambier member and event organiser Graham Robinson called on motorists to take advantage of the free headlights and tyre check.
The initiative also comes ahead of the Easter break and the school holidays, which will see thousands of people take to the road.
“We are hoping more than 100 vehicles will come through between 5.30pm and 7.30pm at the Mount Gambier venue,” Mr Robinson said.
“We will have mechanics from the Barry Maney Group changing globes if they are needed.”
Mr Robinson said it was crucial headlights were working and aligned correctly leading into the wintry road conditions.
“If they are not aligned properly, obviously the headlights are not going to work properly,” the veteran volunteer said.
Mr Robinson said the Rotary movement had been rolling out this important initiative for more than 20 years.
“With the support of the Barry Maney Group and their employees we can adjust the headlights and if the lights are blown, they can be replaced for just the cost of the globe,” he said.
“This is a coordinated event that is supported by the Limestone Coast Local Government Association and Cockys Autopro give us a supply of globes and Trident Tyre Centre staff will check the tyres for wear.”
This initiative will be rolled out simultaneously at other venues in the region, including Bordertown, Naracoorte and Millicent.
“We are trying to cover the whole of the South East,” Mr Robinson said.
Barry Maney Group car service advisor Grant Ferguson also urged people to take advantage of the safety check.
“People can just turn up and there will be three lanes for the vehicles. This is an opportunity for motorists to check their cars leading into winter,” Mr Ferguson said.
He said the Barry Maney Group looked forward to being a part of the event.
“It’s a great initiative and a chance to give back to the community,” he said.
“The guys here love getting involved and helping customers.”
