HUNDREDS of punters flocked to Penola Racecourse on Sunday for Millicent’s biggest sporting and social event of the year, the 3MP Millicent Cup.

Although the day delivered cooler weather, it did not dampen the spirits of revellers who enjoyed an action-packed day conversing track side, placing bets and drinking aplenty.

Millicent Racing Club president Mark Dwyer said overall he was pleased with the event, in particular with the atmosphere.

“While the crowd numbers appeared down in comparison to previous years, there still was a great atmosphere at the event,” he said.

“The betting turnover was better than average, local musicians JB and Crowie were really good, as was the food trade.

“We have had a lot more memberships this year and it was more about getting people through the gate.

“It is my first year as president and we will hold a meeting next week and analyse the whole thing.

“We received great support from Millicent and surrounding districts and it was a family fun day out- accommodating for people of all ages.”

In addition to the races people enjoyed the food trucks, Fashion at the Races competition, bar and TAB facilities and the Redelva luncheon, which included a three course meal and drinks.

The fashion stakes were high and pant suits were a popular choice among those who entered as were bright and bold colours.

Tanya Wilson was crowned the winner, while Lauren Harvey finished runner-up, Melanie Wade won best foot wear and Belinda Nurse claimed the prize for best millinery.
