EXCLUSIVE: Second KFC store enters market place to expand fast food sector

MOUNT Gambier’s appetite for additional fast food outlets continues with international giant Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) proposing a second store in the city.

The fast food company’s planning consultants have lodged development plans with City Council to build a new concept store on the northern fringe of Mount Gambier.

The new store is flagged to be built alongside the Woolworths Petrol Station at the sprawling Mount Gambier Marketplace site on Penola Road.

According to the application, the development is expected to cost $1.4m to construct.

The application follows a cluster of fast food development applications being lodged with council in recent times.

These included the $6m new McDonald’s store on Jubilee Highway East, which is now completed, along with a $10m expansion by On The Run in Mount Gambier.

It is understood the original Marketplace plans foreshadowed a fast food development at the site.

Council strategic project officer Tracy Tzioutziouklaris confirmed yesterday the application had been lodged with council’s planning assessment department.

According to the blueprint, the proposed store will be a click and collect drive-through concept.

Ms Tzioutziouklaris said the application would now go through council’s assessment process.

It is understood the application is likely to be category three, which means it may go to public comment.

The plans show there will be four drive through entry points with boomgate entry.

The Marketplace site is owned by Shopping Centres Australasia Property Group.
