SPECIAL EVENT: The Penola Friends of Stand Like Stone have secured a special screening of Kenyan film Supa Modo to be screened at the Coonawarra Hall later this month.

AFTER partnering with the Adelaide Film Festival for two years, the Penola Friends of Stand Like Stone has privileged access to films yet to be released to the general public.

The latest film to be sourced is Supa Modo, a Kenyan production which the group has secured from France, but its bid almost failed.

“Costs were a factor – as well as trying to get the actual copy of the film without it falling into public hands – but after some negotiating and use of technology to lower the spend, we managed to secure the screening rights,” Stand Like Stone director Rhett McDonald said.

Supa Modo tells the story of Jo, a witty nine-year-old terminally ill girl who is taken back to her rural village to live out the rest of her short life.

Her only comfort during these dull times is her dream of being a superhero, which proves to be something her rebellious teenage sister Mwix, overprotective mother Kathryn and the entire village of Maweni think they can fulfill.

“We thought Penola, especially families, would delight in this film, it will warm your heart and inspire,” Mr McDonald said.

“It shows you what strength you can find within yourself in the face of difficulties.

“I would encourage anyone interested to read the Directors Notes on the Supa Modo website which gives you a good insight into the purity of this film. I think kids and adults alike will be moved by the story.”

The film screens at Coonawarra Hall on March 22 from 7pm.

Proceeds from the film will be added to the fundraising for the Penola Coonawarra Stand Like Stone Sub Fund.
