MOUNT Gambier businessman Vince Versace has made a sizable contribution to a charity he holds close to his heart.
The $20,000 donation to Foodbank SA Mount Gambier is part of Mr Versace’s ongoing relationship with the vital community charity.
Mr Versace first met Foodbank SA general manager Leigh Royans in 2003 after they were introduced by the late Barry Maney OAM.
Mr Royans said he vividly remembered the first time he met Mr Versace.
“I recall standing in the warehouse with Barry and Vince going over the alterations required to make the building suitable for food safe storage,” he said.
Since that day, Mr Versace has maintained his support of the Mount Gambier branch, culminating in 2016 when he built on Mr Maney’s legacy as branch ambassador, and through his business,
stepped up a commitment to improve Foodbank’s service in the region.
“The important thing to remember when donating food or a financial contribution is that it stay here in the region to help people who require that support,” Mr Versace said.
“The more people that are involved the more successful Foodbank will be.”
Mr Versace praised the work done by branch manager Lynne Neshoda and her team of volunteers.
“Lynne and her team are doing an excellent job,” he said.
“Foodbank functions well because of a committed group of selfless volunteers who assist in the day to day duties each week.
“I have also had great support from the residents of Woodlands and Hallmont assisting me with can drives and barbecues for the charity.”
Ms Neshoda said support from community members such as Mr Versace were vital to the organisation.
“These monetary donations and food drives are critical to Foodbank supplying basic food items to families in need,” she said.
“Before Christmas at our annual food drive, Vince matched can for can on what he had collected.
“His generosity is second to none and I greatly appreciate his support.”
