Beachport police officer takes up post in Whyalla

ON DUTY: Brevet Sergeant Tim Johnson laid a wreath at the 2017 Anzac Day dawn service at Beachport.

BREVET Sergeant Tim Johnson has been transferred to Whyalla after two years in charge of Beachport police.

Kintore ward councillor and seaside businessman Peter Dunnicliff told the Wattle Range Council meeting of the move on Tuesday.

Cr Dunnicliff praised Bvt Sgt Johnson for his dedicated police work over the past two years and asked Mayor Des Noll OAM to send him a letter of commendation on behalf of council.

In reply, Mr Noll endorsed the request to send a letter.

Beachport has had a resident police officer for almost 140 years but there had been widely-held fears a long-running statewide police review would downgrade its status to seasonal staffing only.

However, a police spokesperson said the Beachport station would continue to operate.

“The position will be filled through the normal selection process and coverage will be provided in the interim from other stations,” the spokesperson said.

“A relief officer will be placed in Beachport over the school holiday, Easter and Anzac Day period to ensure coverage during this peak period.”
