MOUNT Gambier’s Hay Drive bridge has now been fully removed with the new two-way road officially opening last Wednesday.

City Council project manager Andrew Thompson said the infrastructure overhaul was a complete success.

“We did not go over budget, we met the timeline and everything ran very smooth,” Mr Thompson said.

“There was no use in having the bridge there because the road that used to go underneath it went to the old hospital which is not there anymore.

“This was an opportunity to reduce ongoing costs and now we have something cheaper to maintain, has more practicality and is also safer.”

The new road is also expected to reduce the potential of anti-social behaviour in the area such as illegal dumping or vandalism.

South East firm GT Bobcat was contracted for the project and carried out the demolition before compacting 2000 cubic metres of soil for the new road.

Landscaping is yet to come, with council planning to plant native vegetation and install a footpath to link with others in the area.
