No membership interest for boat ramp committee

NO INTEREST: The Beachport boat ramp advisory committee did not receive any public or community group nominations.

IT is used by hundreds of “boaties” each summer but there were no nominations from public or community groups for membership of the Beachport boat ramp advisory committee.

Wattle Range Council operates the facility and has a seven-member committee to guide its use.

It is required to meet on at least three occasions per year.

Following the November elections every four years, council re-establishes various sub-committees which oversee community facilities.

The Beachport District Development Association and the Beachport Professional Fishermen Association are entitled to nominate one member each on the Beachport boat ramp advisory committee but have declined to do so.

The constitution of the committee also allows for two community representatives and a recreational fisher user of the boat ramp.

Council appointed Kintore Ward representatives Dr Kevin McGrath and Peter Dunnicliff to the committee in November.

The February monthly meeting accepted a staff recommendation that council review the ongoing need for such a seaside committee.

Cr Dunnicliff said he had spoken with previous members and they had indicated the committee did not continue.

According to Cr Dunnicliff, these members would like to continue to have discussions about the boat ramp with council’s engineering services director Peter Halton with a view to retain local knowledge on an as required basis.
