Book lovers share passion at city library

BLIND DATE: Literature lovers can visit the Mount Gambier Library today and pick up a “blind date” book. The books are covered with only a cryptic message on the front so readers have no idea what they are borrowing until they get home and unwrap the surprise.

ON the day of love, Limestone Coast residents were invited to the Mount Gambier Library to celebrate Library Lovers’ Day.

A worldwide holiday, literature lovers across the region converged on the community hub to share their similar passion.

Library Lovers’ Day is a chance for local library lovers’ to celebrate everything that libraries offer the community; whether it be a social place to visit, a chance to escape within a great book, children’s rhymes and stories, or hilarious author visits.

Mount Gambier Library manager Georgina Davison said the facility had celebrated the holiday during week with a variation of different events held.

“During this week we have had our ‘blind date’ books, which are wrapped up with a cryptic clue on the front so readers do not know what they’re borrowing until they get home,” she said.

“We selected a host of different titles, authors and genres for the attraction and we hope it helps readers branch out into books they may not have otherwise borrowed.

DAY OF LOVE: Olive, 2, visits Mount Gambier Library on Valentine’s Day and Library Lovers’
Day proving you are never too young to enjoy a good book.

“In addition certain books with hidden love letters will go in the draw to win a $150 voucher from Commodore on the Park which is a great little give away to celebrate not only Library Lovers’ Day but Valentine’s Day as well.”

Yesterday also saw the launch of the Libraries SA smartphone application.

The free app gives Mount Gambier Library customers access to the facilitiy’s services no matter where they are.

The app allows community members to search and place holds on physical books, DVDs and CDs, as well as access digital content such as eBooks, digital magazines and online learning from their mobile device.

Customers can also manage their loans and use the app as a virtual library card as the app is capable of displaying a customer’s name and barcode.

“If you’re out of town or at a friend’s place and you see a book or DVD you like you can scan the barcode to see if we have it on offer,” Ms Davison said.

“The you can place it on hold if you like or if we do not have it you can send us a message and suggest we get it in stock.

“It’s a really handy little app and we’re really excited to see our customers using it.”

Australian author Rosalie Ham also visited the Blue Lake city yesterday to give an author talk.

Ms Ham’s book, The Dressmaker, is now a Hollywood blockbuster and residents had a chance last night to learn about her career and the progression from book to movie.
