Hay Drive bridge work on schedule

NEW ROAD: The $191,000 Hay Drive redevelopment is halfway to completion, with council expected to start construction of a new two-way road next week.

WORKS at the former Hay Drive bridge are expected to be complete in three weeks pending on weather, Mount Gambier City Council says.

Demolition on the 60-year-old bridge started late last month and will be replaced with a two-lane roadway in a $191,000 project.

Council will start construction of the new two lane road early next week which will involve kerbing, new pavement and an asphalt surface.

Council infrastructure general manager Nick Serle said contractors had finished compacting the material underneath where the bridge used to sit.

“The material is comprised of salvaged concrete, limestone and brick including rubble from the old bridge itself,” he said.

“This practice makes good fill material and re-uses demolition material in an appropriate way.

“The soil on-site will be topped up and the garden area will be mulched.

“Council will re-vegetate this area with suitable trees and low level grasses after the summer period ends to ensure enough moisture in the ground to keep the new plantings alive.”

Mr Serle reminded members of the public access to the extension of Hay Drive is available via Keegan Drive (Bay Road end) for the duration of the works.
