TENNIS action continued across the South East last weekend, with teams contesting round 13 of the Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association season.

With two rounds now remaining until finals, things have heated up in the Division 1 competition, played on Friday night.

The top teams sent a clear message as they gear up for finals in a few weeks.

In the men, ladder-leader Uniting Church rained havoc on a win-less Reidy Park, taking the win in straight sets, 6-0.

Second-placed Glencoe Maroon also flexed its muscles, defeating Centrals/Uniting 5-1.

The same result saw Glencoe Gold – third on the ladder – account for West Gambier by four sets.

For Uniting Church it received few answers to its dominant form, with the only close game resulting in a loss to Reidy’s Zayne Young after a tie-break against Brendan McInnes.

The next closest matches were 6-2 results, with Uniting Church carrying plenty of momentum into this week’s clash with West.

Glencoe Maroon will chase every set it can get its hands on in the next two rounds, with just two points separating it from Uniting on the ladder.

A four-set win over Centrals keeps it within touch, with some close hit outs on the night.

Riley Burn won the only set for Centrals with a tiebreaker win over Dave Boyce in the top singles, while 7-5 victories to Glencoe’s Tim Biggins and Kevin Thomson saw the momentum swing.

The doubles were each won by Glencoe 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2, handing the side a solid win.

The final men’s game saw Glencoe Gold take a comfortable four-set victory over West.

A 6-4 win to Ethan Schultz and Josh DeDonatis in their doubles against Dylan Childs and Andrew Hughes was the only triumph for West.

The closest match of the night saw Childs and David Ferguson account for Schultz and Jacob Wilkinson 7-5 in the top doubles.

In the women’s competition Mount Schank had the bye for the round.

The remaining games saw Reidy Park with a four-set win over Uniting Church – a reversal of the men’s encounter – while Glencoe had a close 4-2 win over West Gambier.

All of the matches between West and Glencoe saw solid wins, with the closest a 6-3 win to Chelsea Mckinnon and Ashlea Edwards in their doubles partnership.

Reidy Park had it easier, with a comfortable win over Uniting Church.

Reidy’s Bailey Young had a 6-3 win over Jade Delaney in the number one clash, while the only triumph for Uniting was a tiebreaker win to Karen Mitchell over Emily Edwards.

This week will see teams contest the penultimate minor round, before finals kick into gear two weeks later.
