Students gear up for Fire Friday fun

MILLICENT North Primary School students exchanged navy and gold uniforms for shades of red, yellow and white at the school’s annual Fire Friday casual day last week.

Reception through to the senior school students donned warm colours to raise funds and recognise the dedicated and selfless contribution of Country Fire Service volunteers to the community.

Crews from Millicent’s CFS brigade visited the school, with two trucks and a number of volunteers outlining their invaluable community role while showcasing their skills.

Brigade members discussed the importance of fire safety with students before allowing eager participants the opportunity to explore the fire truck and use the fire hose.

School principal Graham Slarks said the emergency services inspired casual day is in its fifth year and has raised around $1000 from gold coin donations and contributions by students.

“Each year the CFS comes to the school and show the students some of the gear they use and what they do,” he said.

“It is a great way to foster awareness for the students about the role of the CFS and its volunteers.

“Later on in life, students may be inspired to take on voluntary roles.

“It also fits in with the Humanities and Social Science curriculum as it provides students with an understanding of the greater community.”

Following the demonstration, students presented the CFS with a cheque of $200 raised on the day.
