FURTHER prime pieces of land in Millicent are set to be placed on the open market by the State Government for the first time since the town was surveyed almost 150 years ago.
Vacant land and rail track adjoining Apex Park and Millicent Farm Supplies were listed for sale with a local real estate agent last month and expressions of interest close February 15.
These two lots measures almost 5000 square metres and contain decorative trees.
In response to the recent appearance of a large number of pink-topped surveyors pegs elsewhere along the Millicent township rail corridor, The South Eastern Times directed a number of queries to the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure.
Senior media officer Danielle Gleeson said the department had identified a number of additional parcels of former railway land in Millicent as surplus to State Government requirements.
“These parcels will be brought to market once relevant site testing has been completed in the near future,” Ms Gleeson said.
“The proceeds of rail land sales will be returned to the Rail Transport Facilitation Fund as required by legislation.”
The “pink pegs” have been placed along the rail track and the eastern side of Towers Road between Short Street and Emily Street.
The area contains numerous trees planted in a special program a few years ago by staff of the Kimberly-Clark Australia Millicent Mill.
A block on the south eastern corner of Short Street and Towers Road had a timber-framed house for railway employees until it was removed in the 1980s.
Wattle Range Council has been negotiating with various State Government departments and ministers over many years for the former Millicent rail lands.
However, last month Transport Minister Stephan Knoll advised council the rail lands would be offered on the open market.
