THE flow-on effect to the Penola district of the 35th International Beefsteak and Burgundy Convention was recognised on Saturday when it was named Wattle Range Council’s Riddoch Ward community event of the year.
The event saw more than 270 delegates from across the globe travel to the region for a weekend of wine, food and fellowship.
With an estimated injection of around $700,000 to the Limestone Coast, the convention was vital for tourism growth in 2018.
Delegates stayed in accommodation around the region with all available rooms booked in Penola and Coonawarra.
Cafes and cellar doors also saw a number boost which was positive for the industries.
The idea started in 2014 and the region’s three beefsteak and burgundy clubs go on board to make it a reality.
The convention was hailed a resounding success by those in attendance and the wider community.
“The whole event was a prime example of the wonderful community we live in,” convention representative Wendy Hollick said.
“Around 80 people were involved in the actual work of putting it together, but it would not have been possible without the support of the whole community.
“I want to thank everyone who made this a reality and I am honoured to receive this award on behalf of them.”
