Happy campers explore Portland

HAPPY CAMPERS: A group of eight campers trekked around Portland while on the Cara Camps for Kids this month.

IT was all fun in the sun for South East children when Cara’s Camps for Kids was held in Portland earlier this month.

The camp – hosted by one of South Australia’s largest disability-services, Cara – offers children and teens with disabilities the chance to learn, grow in independence and have fun.

Across the three-day event, which is supported by the National Disability Insurance Scheme, eight campers enjoyed a ride on Portland’s iconic cable tram, trekked through a fauna park, saw Australia’s only mainland colony of gannets and visited a strawberry and raspberry farm to pick their own berries.

Cara Camps for Kids South East team leader Bianca Howley said the camp was successful.

“All the kids had a wonderful time on Cara’s third South East Camps for Kids,” she said.

“The strawberry and raspberry farms were a real highlight of the camp and the children loved meeting the animals.

“We are grateful to these businesses for being so welcoming of the campers.”

Ms Howley said she was grateful for the “lovely weather” throughout the camping trip.

“Everyone enjoyed getting out in to the Portland community, visiting local playgrounds and splashing in the water at the beach,” she said.

“The children are all really excited about the next South East Camps for Kids in April.

“We welcome any new campers to join us for a few days of fun, learning and adventure.”

Ms Howley said children were already counting down the days until the next trip.

“The entire community has really got behind the Camps for Kids program here in the South East,” she said.

“Cara’s Camps for Kids are available for children with disabilities aged up to 18 and trained Cara staff are on hand to work with every camper.”
