OPPORTUNITY: The Imagine Millicent art group is encouraging people to comment on a proposed mural on “Beehive Corner” by internationally renowned street artist Fin DAC.

AN internationally renowned street artist who has collaborated with brands such as Armani, Red Bull and Jagermeister may leave his mark on Millicent with an attention-grabbing mural.

Imagine Millicent Arts Group (IMAG) are in negotiations with Irish-born urban artist Fin DAC to create an large scale mural in the town’s central business district.

The artist – who has also completed work for The Royal Albert Hall in London – is in New Zealand and Australia this summer and has offered to come to Millicent to add to the mural scape of the town.

Andrew Pratt has offered the side wall of his commercial building on the corner of George Street and North Terrace – “Beehive Corner” – for the mural.

The current concept design is titled Fengwo, which is Chinese for beehive and a nod to the history of the building and its earlier name, Beehive Corner.

His vibrant renditions of females decorate walls, rooftops and forogotten urban landscapes in every continent of the world.

One of Fin DAC’s most famous Australian works – Shinka – is located in Adelaide and was subsequently featured on an Australian Post Street Art stamp collection.

IMAG member Caroline Hammat said the rare opportunity “would be a real coup for Millicent” and could bring international attention to the town.

She said while the design showed the placement and composition of the mural, there would be changes to the colour and elements “in keeping with Fin DAC’s signature style”.

Ms Hammat said the group’s intent was to build on the social and economic benefits that have arised from Mimby Jones Robinson’s Water Goddess mural.

“This mural has had extensive media coverage and has bought visitors to the town,” she said.

“Data from two separate surveys conducted by IMAG indicated 92pc and 97pc support for more public art in Millicent.

“This is a story that is growing and continues to receive widespread attention beyond our immediate area through both traditional media and online platforms.”

The group said the proposal would also offer the opportunity for a local artist to assist Fin DAC on the project.

Community members are encouraged to have their say on the proposal as soon as possible.
