Industry leaders ready to test track

HOPEFUL: Veteran Mount Gambier trainer Michael O’Leary says the new Glenburnie racetrack is looking good. Picture: SANDRA MORELLO

VETERAN Mount Gambier trainer Michael O’Leary said the local industry is keen to get back on the newly constructed Glenburnie Racecourse after a “massive disruption”.

“To say we are keen to get back on the track is an under statement,” Mr O’Leary told The Border Watch.

While it was not known how the track would perform, he said the signs looked positive.

“It looks good and it feels good under foot – we now just have to see how it will race,” the thoroughbred trainer said.

“It will be interesting to see what happens – all we can do is hope for the best.”

He said the track shut down had severely disrupted training and resulted in trainers reducing the number of horses.

“Trainers have been struggling to work their horses properly. It has been a massive disruption.”
