Car found burnt-out in tourist hot spot

DESTROYED: Police are investigating a car fire near the Lady Nelson, which completely destroyed the vehicle. Picture: MOLLY TAYLOR

POLICE are seeking any witnesses who may have seen suspicious activity at the Lady Nelson in the early hours of Sunday morning, following a car fire near the tourist location.

Mount Gambier Police and Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) crews were called to Eustace Street at around 4.15am following reports of the blaze.

Mount Gambier Police officer in charge Senior Sergeant Chris King said officers arrived to find a red Ford on fire.

“It was not a stolen vehicle, but we are treating the fire as suspicious,” Snr Sgt King said.

Mount Gambier MFS retained station officer Rob Baker said it took eight firefighters around five minutes to extinguish the blaze.

“The car was engulfed in fire when our two crews arrived,” Mr Baker said.

“It was in an open area at the back of the Lady Nelson, so it did not threaten any other buildings or vehicles.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to report online at crimestopperssa.com.au or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
