Hit and run truck driver granted bail

A MOUNT Gambier man involved in a fatal hit and run collision near the Coorong on Thursday has been granted bail by the court.

Daniel Luke Barry, 37, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of driving without due care and one count of leaving the scene of an accident.

The prosecution alleged Barry was the driver of a truck, which struck a 60-year-old Victorian man on the Princes Highway, 50kms north of Kingston.

Paramedics rushed to the area, however were unable to save the man who died at the scene.

Barry failed to stop after the accident causing police to search for damage on vehicles in the surrounding area.

However, the court heard Barry later notified police that he was the man involved in the crash and officers arrested him in Naracoorte on Thursday afternoon.

He appeared in court this afternoon where he was granted bail to live with his parents.

Conditions were also made that he not drive a truck of any kind.

The prosecution asked for the matter to be put off for six months while forensic material was obtained in relation to the truck.

They said the evidence on the bull bar will be significant in proving the elements of the charges.

Defence counsel did not oppose the delay and the matter was adjourned until July 15.

Bail was set in the sum of $5000 to reflect the seriousness of the alleged offending.
