Punters to head trackside for annual Coonawarra event

PROMISING EVENT: Penola Racing Club president Mark Edwards looks forward to next week’s Coonawarra Vignerons Cup.

A FULL house is expected at next week’s Coonawarra Vignerons Cup with punters from across the Limestone Coast descending on the district for Penola Racing Club’s biggest annual event.

The cup’s marquees are already selling out with around 3000 spectators expected on January 17.

Club president Mark Edwards said the Coonawarra Vignerons Marquee and the Coopers Winning Post Marquee were both almost full.

“We have had a really good response for the cup,” he said.

“It’s a huge event in the racing calendar so people definitely make a point to attend.

“We’re hopeful for a cracker day with a big crowd there to celebrate with us.”

A perfect 26 degrees is forecast for the event, but with long-range forecasting not always accurate, Mr Edwards remained hopeful the prediction was precise.

“Last year we faced a 41 degree day, so we hope to have more comfortable temperatures to work with,” he said.

“You never know what will change, but it’s looking like a perfect day for racing so far.”

With the track facing problems last year, Mr Edwards assured racegoers there was nothing to worry about next week.

“The track is back in tip top shape and ready for the meet,” he said.

“We had a few woes but we’re committed to making sure the track’s condition is perfect.”

Mr Edwards also noted punters may be pleasantly surprised when they head through the gates next week.

“We have gotten rid of all of the overhead power lines and the power box,” he said.

“It is much cleaner and clearer trackside now which just brings the aesthetic up a bit.

“We have a pretty picturesque setting with the vineyards surrounding us so now it’s just that bit easier to appreciate it.”

The Coonawarra Vignerons Cup day starts from 9.30am with racing from around 12.30pm.
