Hunters kept from lagoon

ABUNDANCE: Bool Lagoon is flooded with bird life and an ideal place to enjoy what South East nature has to offer.

BOOL Lagoon will once again be closed to hunters, while the rest of the state will see restrictions on the number of duck and quails they are able to take each day.

Hunters will be able to take eight ducks and 15 quail per hunter per day in what the State Government has described as a “precautionary approach” for the season.

Duck season begins on March 16 and finishes on June 30.

Quail season will start on February 16 and end on August 31.

Environment and Water Minister David Speirs said the decision to allow a duck and quail season was based on scientific research and consultation with stakeholder groups.

Duck and quail hunters in South Australia must hold a valid gun licence and a permit from the environment department and duck hunters must have passed a waterfowl identification test.

They must also use non-toxic shot and comply with the code of practice for the humane destruction of birds by shooting.

The Australasian (blue-winged) shoveler will be excluded from hunting due to ongoing concerns about the population.
