Excursion opens young eyes to timber industry

VITAL INDUSTRY: Rendelsham Primary School students recently witnessed a timber harvesting operation.

RENDELSHAM Primary School students have received a practical lesson in a major regional primary industry.

Accompanied by staff and parents, children donned safety vests and ventured nearby to a mature pine plantation before the summer holiday break.

They witnessed contractors harvest the pines and also had the opportunity to quiz them back in their classrooms.

The harvesting was done by SFM Asset Management and regional manager Mike Lawson welcomed the involvement of the students.

“We had a fantastic day engaging with the children on all things forestry,” Mr Lawson said.

“We discussed the environmental benefits of sustainable plantation forestry and the careers it can provide for those interested. ”

The pine plantation was planted 45 years ago and measures 1.5 hectares.

The sawlogs will be exported via Portland.

It is understood the revenue from the sale of the logs will benefit Rendelsham Primary School and kindergarten.

Due to the small size of the plot, the Wattle Range Council land is set to be returned by council to native vegetation.
