Suspended sentence for disqualified driver

A SOUTH East man has received a suspended term of imprisonment after he was caught driving disqualified near Robe.

Paul Goodridge, 41, appeared in the Millicent Magistrates Court to be sentenced for the offending.

The prosecution said Goodridge was stopped on the Southern Ports Highway near Robe on August 25.

Checks revealed the defendant was driving disqualified and police clamped his car.

When interviewed, Goodridge told police he knew he should not have been driving.

He said he was going to visit a friend in Robe because he did contract work in the area.

Magistrate Teresa Anderson was less than impressed with Goodridge’s explanation.

“So you were just completely ignoring your disqualification order?” Magistrate Anderson said.

“Yes,” Goodridge replied.

Magistrate Anderson re-iterated the seriousness of driving disqualified.

“You are one of hundreds of people who ignore disqualification orders and you need to understand it is a serious offence,” Magistrate Anderson said.

“You are a mature man who should know better than to ignore an order for disqualification.”

She sentenced Goodridge to 18 days imprisonment, which would be suspended on him entering into a $500, 12 month good behaviour bond.

He was also ordered to pay $280.55 to cover the cost of the clamping fee.
