A WAVE of community support continues to flow in for Mount Gambier’s Foodbank SA branch.

In the midst of the festive frenzy as residents stock up for the holiday period, the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce is the latest organisation to back the charity, donating $1000.

The last of around 400 Christmas hampers were trucked out of the Cave Road site on Monday, signalling the end of the annual campaign, but the Limestone Coast Food Hub continues to be inundated with residents stocking up on basic supplies ahead of the short holiday break.

Foodbank SA Mount Gambier regional branch manager Lynne Neshoda said the chamber’s donation would be used to restock basic staple and pantry items to meet demands.

“We have had a lot of support from across the region this last month, we really appreciate all the help at the moment,” Ms Neshoda said.

“We have awesome volunteers, I do not know where we would be without them.

“Most of them I have just said come in if you can and they have all arrived.”

Chamber interim president Biddie Shearing said it was a unanimous decision by the board to support Foodbank, with the funds raised through membership fees.

“Our membership is made up of a lot of diverse business owners and businesses in the city area,” Ms Shearing said.

“We are conscious there are those out in the community that need a little help every now and then – we need to make sure we are looking after every pocket of our city.

“At this time of year it can be tricky for some organisations that are doing it pretty tough, so hopefully it can give them that bit of a boost at a busy time.”

Foodbank SA provided 152,000kg of food across the South East last financial year – equating to 334,000 meals.
