SOUTH Australia Police (SAPOL) resumed using hand-held speed detection analysers, commonly called Lidar, on Friday following a change to the Road Traffic Act 1961.

The devices were temporarily withdrawn from use on November 29 as a result of a legal issue applicable to court prosecutions.

Following amendments to the Road Traffic Act 1961, which became law today, SAPOL has resumed operational use of Lidars.

When they were withdrawn from use, the community was advised any person who had been issued with an expiation notice from a police officer who they believed was using a Lidar device and had not yet paid the fine, could make an inquiry by emailing details to lidarenquiries@police.sa.go.au or write to SAPOL.

About 580 inquiries have been lodged with SAPOL and they are now being managed.
