LOCALS have opened their hearts to support those in need across Millicent and district this festive season.
The Millicent Combined Churches Christmas Appeal has again raised several thousand dollars to provide hampers and toys.
Appeal spokesperson Robyn Evans said this level of generosity meant they can support 115 needy families and individuals over the coming Christmas season.
She said local businesses as well as groups like Wattle Range Council and the Millicent Masonic Lodge had either provided cash or goods for the appeal.
“The community has been absolutely terrific in 2018,” Ms Evans said.
“I honestly do not know why.
“Perhaps this is due to greater awareness of issues relating to mental health and homelessness.”
In keeping with past practice, around a dozen members of various local churches gathered at the Millicent Salvation Army Citadel this week to prepare the toys and pack the hampers.
The recipients have been referred to the appeal committee by various agencies, including ac.care, Vinnies, ADRA, Meals on Wheels, South East Community Health Service and the Millicent Community Learning Centre.
The appeal has run every year for over two decades and the number of recipients is in line with past years.
With a value of about $150, the hampers contain food and household items, as well as some treats.
As in past years, the Kimberly-Clark Australia Millicent Mill has donated a large amount of tissue products for distribution.
Local people have also given non-perishable goods and toys through collection boxes placed in the local supermarkets, shops and schools in recent weeks.
The proceeds of a fete in October at the Uniting Church Hall boosted the fundraising tally by $5000.
