A SECTION of Commercial Street East was closed to traffic yesterday morning as a crane lifted the city’s iconic nativity scene into place at the Cave Gardens.

While Christmas decorations went up at the old town hall in November ahead of the annual Mount Gambier Christmas Parade, the nativity scene is traditionally installed at the beginning of December to signify the start of advent.

The nativity scene is among a number of prominent festive decorations across the central business district, including a towering six-metre Christmas tree, garlands, wreaths, large stars and Christmas banners.

Council’s outdoor staff assembled the nativity scene from around 7.30am yesterday, placing the final figures behind the glass inside the “manger” mid-morning.
