Fatality leads to driver extradition

A MOUNT Gambier truck driver has been extradited to Victoria after being charged for his involvement in a fatal crash near Portland in March.

Peter Buckley, 59, crashed his truck into the back of a car, which was stopped at roadworks at the intersection of Nelson-Portland Road and Westlakes Road on March 14.

The initial impact forced the car into a car in front and both vehicles became sandwiched between another truck.

It resulted in the death of a 57-year-old woman from the United Kingdom and caused injuries to four others.

Police enquiries finished with Buckley charged with culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, reckless conduct and three counts of dangerous driving causing serious injury.

He appeared in court and remains in custody for a hearing in January.

In August, Buckley appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on two charges of driving disqualified after having his licence suspended for medical reasons following the fatal crash.

Magistrate Teresa Anderson said the offending was particularly serious because of the nature of the suspension.

“You were suspended for medical reasons after driving a truck and being involved in a fatal accident,” Magistrate Anderson said.

She sentenced Buckley to 18 days imprisonment, however suspended the sentence on him entering a $300, 12-month good behaviour bond.
