THE Penola District Cultural Fund’s John Shaw Nielson Sculpture Appeal has come to an end with an unveiling set for December 2.
Held at Poet’s Corner in Penola, the bronze bust of Mr Nielson will sit alongside an Adam Lindsay Gordon sculpture.
With the appeal receiving great support from the community, a bust of William Ogilvie has also been commissioned and will be unveiled at the event.
The sculpture of Mr Nielson will be unveiled by John Riddoch Poynter AO while the bust of Mr Ogilvie will be unveiled by Penola’s first mayor Robert Seymour.
Fund chairman Peter Rymill said Mr Nielson and Mr Ogilvie were the perfect choices for the new busts.
“The three men are important parts of Penola’s history as in addition to the country’s,” he said.
“I am very pleased to celebrate the contribution these men have made to poetry.”
Mr Rymill said he was delighted to have both of the new busts unveiled at the event.
“I am delighted to report the initial appeal was so successful we were able to proceed with commissioning the third bust for Poet’s Corner,” he said.
“The generosity from the public is what has made this possible.
“Everyone is invited to the unveiling and I hope we have a great crowd.”
Before the ceremony, a luncheon will be hosted from noon at the Royal Oak Hotel with the unveiling to start at 2pm.
