THE sound of bicycle wheels spinning and the excitement of children brought Millicent’s road traffic school to life earlier this week.
Children, parents and educators from Millicent North Kindergarten attended a safety session at the newly revamped centre under the guidance of coordinator Sue van der Heul.
Kindergarten director Donna Barber said the session tied in with what children had already learnt about road safety throughout the year.
“Throughout the year we have been participating in a lot of walking activities,” she said.
“We like to bring the children to the road safety school because it is a chance for them to actually be on the other side and be the vehicle and also put everything they have learnt into practice.
“This group of children will be starting primary school next year, so part of their road safety learning is teaching them how to keep safe while walking around the community.
“We tend to do it at the end of the year because it is a culmination of the other road safety we have learnt.
“Walking takes all year for the children to get used to doing safely.
“We start with really short walks to the library or the playground, then we get longer and start walking to the gym, high school and Hart Court.”
Children learnt to stop at the red lights and stop signs, give way and look both ways, as well as the importance of wearing their helmet and staying in their allocated lane.
