WORK will soon start on upgrades along the Millicent-Kingston road, with the State Government overseeing more than $4m of investment into the Princes Highway.
The works will encompass the section of highway south of Kingston to within approximately 2.5km south of Clay Wells.
Planned upgrades include the Princes Highway and Clay Wells Road junction, a full width carriageway reseal, new edge lines and reflectors and shoulder sealing for the full length of the Earthquake Springs project site.
The works form part of a $4.4m package funded through both Shoulder Sealing Program and Critical Road Maintenance.
Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Minister Stephan Knoll said the works marked the government’s continued focus on infrastructure upgrades in the region.
“The Marshall Government continues to invest and improve South Australia’s regional road network, particularly in the South East,” he said.
“Important works such as audio tactile line marking and raised reflectors make our country roads that much safer for locals and tourists alike.
“The South East is such an important part of our state and home to big industry from forestry through to fisheries, supporting thousands of jobs and a thriving local tourism sector.
“That’s why it’s so important we keep investing in regional infrastructure.”
Member for MacKillop Nick McBride said it was pleasing to see works start on an important section of the highway.
“The Princes Highway is an important transport corridor for business and tourism and the safety of all who use them is paramount,” he said.
“Many of my constituents have highlighted the urgent need for this maintenance, so I am pleased to be part of a government that shows a real commitment to the regions and the South East in particular.”
Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi said the upgrade would boost safety along the popular route.
“It is one of the worst highways in the region and it is in desperate need of widening,” he said.
“We had a lot of people use that road and there has been a number of serious accidents at that location, including a fatality.
“Any upgrades to the Princes Highway north of Millicent is welcome.”
