A MAN in his late 20s received serious injuries in a two-vehicle collision on the Princes Highway on Friday.

Personnel from Millicent Police, the Country Fire Service (CFS), State Emergency Service (SES) and SA Ambulance Service attended the scene of a crash at Burrungule around 4pm.

SA Ambulance Service Limestone Coast operations manager Andrew Thomas said his crew responded to reports of two vehicles colliding.

“Initially there were reports of four patients,” he said.

“Crews from Mount Gambier and Millicent attended the scene, including intensive care paramedics.

“When we arrived to the scene there was a male who was significantly trapped.

“Crew worked alongside the SES and CFS and it took approximately 45 minutes to get the man out of the vehicle.”

The SES used rescue equipment to cut the vehicle open so the driver could be removed and taken to Mount Gambier and District Hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

A driver and two young children in the second car were also sent to hospital with minor injuries.

Mr Thomas praised the work of the emergency services in what he described as a significant event.

“It was reasonably significant given the number of patients,” he said.

“The SES and CFS worked with our crew extremely well so we could look after those involved.”

Meanwhile, Wattle Range CFS group officer Fred Stent said both vehicles were a complete write-off as a result of the crash.

“We had to block the road off for close to an hour while the investigation was conducted,” he said.

“Traffic was diverted during this time.”

It is understood the driver, who sustained serious injuries, was still in hospital when The Border Watch went to print yesterday.

Mount Gambier traffic officers are continuing their investigation.
