A FURTHER trophy has come the way of Robe premiership captain Jonny Agnew to cap off what has been a stellar Mid South East Football League season for the skipper.

He tied for the club champion award with fellow on-baller Jake Wehl when the Roosters held their annual presentation night on Saturday.

The joint runners-up were Adelaide-based brothers Jake and Craig Pitt.

Other highlights at the function were awarding of life membership to past Robe coach and president Chris McLay.

He is a long-serving teacher and principal of Robe Primary School which had 11 old scholars in the 2018 premiership team.

The club also released its annual year book which featured a photograph on its front cover of the winning grand final team taken by The South Eastern Times.

Earlier in the day the seasiders had donned formal address and unfurled their premiership flag at the prominent Royal Circus landmark overlooking Guichen Bay.

The awards to Agnew and Wehl came as little surprise as the pair had been acknowledged by the field umpires in the voting for the Mail Medal in the 2018 Mid South East Football League season.

Agnew won the Walker Medal as runner-up to Port MacDonnell Mail Medallist Daron McElroy, while Wehl was awarded the Bill Hanel Memorial Trophy as the player under 21 years of age polling the most Mail Medal votes.

The past season has arguably been one of the best for Agnew and rivals 2015 when he won a flag with his home club Mount Burr.

After a decorated underage career, the key Rooster has achieved much at senior level over the past decade, including representative honours with the Western Border and MSEFL.

The gutsy rover spent five seasons with Millicent and was captain of the Saints in the last three of them.

The low point at Millicent was probably the 2010 losing grand final to West Gambier, while arguably the high point for the Saints was winning the coveted Corcoran Medal as the club champion.

Another career highlight came eight years ago when he stood Brownlow Medallist and triple Brisbane Lions premiership player Jason Akermanis when he made a guest appearance at Heywood.

At the time of leaving the Saints and returning to Mount Burr a few year ago, then Millicent Football Netball Club president Mr Rick Grimes paid Agnew this tribute.

“He is a tenacious and determined midfielder on the park and a pleasant and affable personality off the field,” Grimes said.
