MOUNT Gambier City Council is not resting on its laurels when it comes to sustainability, recently installing 100pc recycled plastic park benches.

Located within one of the South East’s greatest tourist attractions the Umpherston Sinkhole, the park benches bring a unique spin to Australia’s sustainability movement.

“We are trying to incorporate environmentally friendly options around Mount Gambier and bring attention to recycled content,” council environment sustainability officer Aaron Izzard said.

“Recently installed last month, we hope the benches bring a visual appeal to the public and prompt people to purchase recycled products.

“These benches are specifically made from recycled timber and hard plastic bottles, creating a unique and renewable composition.”

Council also recently installed recycled soft plastic bus shelters and is looking further into developing recycled products to boost public amenity.

“It goes to show that if you do recycle your waste, useful things can be made,” Mr Izzard said.

“One step at a time, we are reducing our impact on the environment and along the way wish to influence Mount Gambier residents to do the same.”
